but the real argument here is the racialized, classed fantasy of LFC as a nostalgic return to previous creator economies: a whiter, wealthier, and western work force.

now we complain that short-form content is enshittified. (partially true with the rise of AI slop content/negative impacts on our attention.)

the rise of short-form content platforms with in-app editing software (eg TikTok) collapsed the playing field for creators.

more people got to participate in creative work without the barriers.

it's been well-documented that early creative work that prioritized long-form content created a huge gap. ideating, filming, and editing LFC is expensive and time consuming.

you need access to [generational] wealth, vocational training, and time (lots of it) to consistently produce LFC.

on 2: even within the same "discipline" or "field," the disciplining is done differently. and yet, if you don't have the capital (social, cultural, economic) to participate across orgs, you are siloed into a certain way of being.

this in turn limits 1: our intellectual output is contained

very true. I'd also say that this is shaped by institutional training/labour patterns and networks of patronage. those of us who are getting phds at "degree mills" or "second-tier" programs are encouraged to take on more in order to compete with those trained at top programs.

the libby subreddit is really helpful! (unfortunately I started pushing every button the platform before I found it.) the tbr spreadsheet is an excellent recommendation, though!
