Strange as it sounds, I think many people find a perverse comfort in the idea that the worst possible climate change outcome is not only possible but inevitable. If you believe we’re past the point where any action matters, you don’t have to actually do anything about it.

This argument would almost make sense if it weren’t for the fact that refusing to pay SNAP was a choice made by the administration, and not automatically mandated by a shutdown. They didn’t have to do this, they chose to.

On Monday, the administration said it would not use additional money., saying it was up to Congress to appropriate the funds for the program and that the other money was needed to shore up other child hunger programs.

Pertussis cases in Texas are 10x higher than all of 2023, and 2x as high as last year — 4x for the same period. The official count is higher by a 1k than it has been in more than a decade. Last time it was over 2k was 2014 with 2,576. It’s past 3,500 for 2025.

So far this year, more than 3,500 cases have been reported. Preliminary data indicate that approximately 85 percent of pertussis cases in Texas this year have occurred among children. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is reporting a significant increase in cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, in 2025. Most news networks are still reporting on this as though it’s a quagmire for which there’s no easy answer. There is, it’s actually *not using* the contingency funds that’s a deviation from protocol. This is purely Trump’s choice and it may not even be legal.
