There’s a petition going around you can sign, and if you’re a member or near or adjacent to the AFM, please get involved. It affects every single musician alive. We can maybe accomplish something if we stand together and we should. It’s worth it.

We Need a Union
The AFM (American Federation of Musicians) claims to represent all musicians. In practice, it doesn’t. AFM contracts with the major film companies and labels (UMG, WMG, Sony) provide excellent benefi...

i'll have to think about it more carefully before i can say something that isn't stupid, but isn't it remarkable how silicon valley has lunged repeatedly in the direction of technologies that seem to have a perfect flexibility in usage, but only to evil ends?

The industry is all the matters to me within this, everything else like CNN, etc, just isn’t something I think matters within modern culture and the Ellisons will end up ratfucked when the dems take over anyway so

I mean, hope I’m wrong! In my gut I don’t think this deal will survive though.
December 5, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Not for movies or the industry at large, by a long shot. Not even close.
December 5, 2025 at 5:28 PM
If you thought superhero movies and modern movies in general were unforgettable direct-to-video schlock, just wait! It can and will get worse! It’s a lose-lose but honestly, the political perspective of the Ellisons will vanish from view overnight along with this administration.

Can’t agree with you here. If it goes through it’s essentially the beginning of the end for what’s left of union protections, theatrical releases, the theater industry in general, and as such millions of jobs. Not to mention just how bad the output’s going to get.
December 5, 2025 at 4:01 PM
They’re much smaller but not if you work with a traditional studio that’s releasing movies in theaters and making physical media an employing union orchestras an composers an songwriters and the like (none of which Netflix does). This is an Iraq/Iran situation but the Netflix option is worse. Truly.
December 5, 2025 at 3:56 PM
And without theatrical returns everyone’s pay dies and royalties are thing of the past.
December 5, 2025 at 3:53 PM
Gonna have to go against this one. Netflix runs and operates as a tech company (and makes mostly terrible, budget-skirting stuff) and as such is able to work around unions and royalties asking as possible and it WILL hasten the death of theaters, which will mean maybe millions of jobs gone

A town and industry-wide revolt and an unfriendly administration can do a lot of damage! As someone else on here said, this is a real Iran/Iraq situation with Netflix vs Paramount.
December 5, 2025 at 1:47 PM
I’d imagine they get it, but I gotta be honest with you this deal going through faces a major uphill battle.
December 5, 2025 at 1:39 PM
Okay, thank you liberalwhiteguy. I’ll just take my lack of knowledge from a lifetime of working in the arts to my own corner of the world snd you can enjoy your extremely bad made-for-streaming schlock in the comfort of your own home while you yell at people on bluesky
December 4, 2025 at 9:09 PM
That ain’t gonna happen. I guarantee it. Just gotta hope things selling okay for Zaslav to try and get Viacom on board.
December 4, 2025 at 9:05 PM
Also stop being lame and boring snd go to a god damn movie. Go to your local art house.
December 4, 2025 at 8:59 PM
Stock evaluations are not the same thing as profit d that bubble is gonna pop sooner or later.

CNN, much like all televised media, is snd has been irrelevant and falling into the hands of a broligarch won’t change that.

Keeping the movie industry alive runs for me in this quagmire.
December 4, 2025 at 8:58 PM
Warner would cease to exist & thousands of jobs would die and the theatrical business is doing just fine and showing major signs of life regardless of your hesitance to engage with culture. Netflix doesn’t make money so they aren’t going to start producing MORE movies, it’ll just kill a competitor.
