Next week, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission will consider the option of creating a one-seat (direct) ride from downtown Victoria to YYJ and on to Swartz Bay. This would be achieved by altering the 72 line and re-routing it to YYJ.

Thoughts? Would you take the bus to YYJ?

Incredible turnout today for Remembrance Day ceremonies at the cenotaph in front of the Legislature.

This week, the City received an update on progress towards our 5-year housing targets.

We exceeded our housing target for year two: 882 net new units came online vs. a target of 766. We are now 48% of the way towards our 5-year targets, and are vastly exceeding our affordable housing goals.

I’m really pleased that, after a long relationship-building and negotiation period, the CRD and Songhees Nation have signed a Protocol Agreement.

This is a government-to-government agreement that formalizes collaboration in numerous domains (parks, utilities, archaeology, economics, planning, etc).

The CRD has now purchased the Kapoor Lands (~4800 acres), for $33.3m, as part of our ongoing efforts to preserve our watershed.

The Kapoor Lands were a longstanding acquisition target for the CRD, as they border Sooke Lake Reserve and are crucial to the watershed. They will no longer be logged.

Today, as we raise the poppy flag outside city hall, we honour Canadian veterans, those who in serve in uniform today, and those who work towards peace, safety, and security worldwide.

I’m excited to be at the groundbreaking of the Chard development at Douglas and Caledonia.

This is a unique development that includes one B.C. Housing affordable housing building, one apartment, and one condo, all on top of a mixed-use podium with a new grocery store.

Huge for downtown!

Councillor @davethompsonvic.bsky.social and I are bringing a motion to the CRD’s Transportation Committee this week to explore Free Youth Bus Passes across the region.

This program already exists in Victoria, where 70% of 13-18 year olds use it.

Reach out to your CRD rep if you want it expanded!

Following the Lapu Lapu tragedy, the city of Victoria launched its own internal review of parade routes and safety.

Based on these findings, the city will transition all major parades from Douglas Street to a Wharf Street waterfront route to enhance public safety and secure event operations.

A short history of the United States and its predecessor colonies:

1585-1965: Openly racist

1965-2016: Racist, but mostly closeted about it, and restrained by legislation and cultural norms.

2016: Back to its roots of open racism.

The reason I’m often at odds with my local newspaper is because of oddities such as this.

The TC wrote an editorial on commercial rent control, citing a UBCM resolution from New West, but neglected to mention that its own city — Victoria! — passed a UBCM resolution on the same topic.

So bizarre.

City staff made this helpful chart to show the differences between the City's old Tenant Assistance Policy and the new Tenant Protection Bylaw.

In short, the Bylaw is *much* more effective, materially significant, and widely applied than the now-defunct policy.

I’m thrilled that Victoria’s new Official Community Plan has passed! It:

✅ Increases housing choice and makes it easier to build affordable housing

✅ Adds green space / parks to every neighbourhood

✅ Targets 40% urban forest canopy coverage

✅ Adds strong tenant protections

✅ Plans for lightrail

An incredible turnout for the Truth and Reconciliation Day ride, en route to the South Island Powwow. This is such a powerful community event.

Thanks to Capital Bike, Kristin and Eddie, Songhees Nation, and all the organizers of the day’s events.

This is a fascinating panel discussion on the Cowichan Tribes decision that found that the Cowichan retain title over some of the lands and waters of the Fraser where a traditional summer fishing village once existed, and which are now in Richmond.

Never been a case to declare Indigenous title…

A real honour to be present at the Legislature grounds for the raising of the orange flag to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Thank you to Eddie, Kristin, local First Nations elders, and others who led this solemn and moving ceremony.

Did you know that the City of Victoria is one of only two local governments in this region that’s a living wage employer?

Without looking it up, can you name the other one??

The new Official Community Plan will increase Victoria's commitments to urban trees.

Every year, Victoria adds new trees. There's now 150,000 trees in the city limits. Trees now cover 30% of the city, up from 26% a few years ago.

The new Plan commits to an incredible 40% coverage.

Tomorrow we discuss the future of parking in Victoria. Should there be parking minimums in new developments? Parking maximums? A permit system? Resident only parking?

Much to discuss on a complex topic.

Related: here is the current data from our Parkades app on available parking downtown.

With the 158-home Caledonia affordable housing project opening soon, the next CRHC non-market project in Victoria is this one — Village on the Green.

160 affordable homes at the edge of downtown, including 29 three-bedrooms. Slated for completion in 2028.

This year, city council approved this development 6-3 on Gladstone.

Met the OCP and neighb. plan & exceeded Family Housing Policy.

18 purpose-built rentals, including six 3-beds, and a ground-floor bakery. Car-free development with Modo and cargo-bike parking.

Fantastic addition to Fernwood.

Extremely pumped that all the work at Vic High and our new CRHC affordable housing complex in Fernwood are nearly completing…at the same time.

Time to take down all the fences that have been clogging up the neighbourhood. 158 affordable homes + upgraded school, soccer field, and volleyball. Sweet.
