Today in 1949, the US Atomic Energy Commission and US Air Force conducted a secret experiment at the Hanford Reservation in Washington State, exposing thousands of people living downwind to dangerous levels of radioactive iodine-131 and xenon-133 from freshly-irradiated or “green” uranium fuel.

Overheard in this cafe:

Two silver-haired women talking, one explaining monster fucking very earnestly

Silver 1: Well, a Sasquatch is a a hairy gentleman who lives in the woods and some people want to make love to him. They write stories!

Silver 2: Really?! A Sasquatch?!

Best OH ever.

#WorldAIDSDay We’ve lost do many friends & relatives to AIDS. Today we remember their talent & beauty & kindness. I was honored to be Rock Hudson’s date to a Lifetime Achievement Award. A gracious & lovely gentleman. We’ve lost so many, but also made so much progress #BeKind #ReachOut 💔

LONG RAMBLING EMOTIONAL THREAD:

It's World AIDS Day. Since the Administration has decided to keep it quiet, I'd like to share my introduction to AIDS.

I grew up in Seattle. My mom remarried a man who had a brother who was a King County Sheriff's Deputy. His name was Terry and he was gay. 1/x

Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
I'm so tired of measles.

I'm also tired of people using needle shots on stories like this.

Show what measles looks like.

“everyone is twelve” theory has reached Senator Kelly
Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.

The average American income is below the poverty line in almost every major city. If you want people to shop, you need to pay them enough money that they can spend some of it. There is an actual limit to how many hours a day a person can work.
If you want people to spend more, pay them more.

this is exactly why Mark Kelly et al did that spot telling military and intelligence officers they can refuse illegal orders — there's no way Hegseth or Trump will EVER accept blame for them
WAPO: “.. Officials in Congress and the Pentagon said Monday they are increasingly concerned that the Trump administration intends to scapegoat the military officer who directed U.S. forces to kill two survivors of a targeted strike ..”

In Trump World, the buck stops with someone lower down, whoever is available to pin it on. No integrity, no honor, no responsibility; just grift, bigotry, and cruelty.
Breaking news: Government officials said they are increasingly concerned that the Trump administration intends to scapegoat the military officer who directed U.S. forces to kill survivors of a targeted strike on suspected drug smugglers in Latin America.
Hegseth, with White House help, tries to distance himself from boat strike fallout
As Congress vows accountability, the Trump administration emphasized it was a top military commander — not the defense secretary — who directed the engagement.

Thread, up and down.

Something I keep in mind — my gran was a plump lady, and when I got custody of her, she was falling 3-4 times a day. She got bruised, one time she cut her forehead, but all that adipose in her butt and thighs? Shock absorbers. Someone thinner would have broken both hips.
it is not like. a weird mistake! the minimum viable amount of fat for a critter is not zero, and the optimal level of fat is not the minimum viable level.
