Young Samson and Goliath (1967) is a great example of the literal wish fulfilment of transforming into a figure of power.

While He-Man may be the most celebrated example now and Captain Marvel historically (Shazam!), young Samson has transforming the pet with the hero!

An earlier ad for Fighting Ships. I think Russ Heath gets some credit for setting the bar higher for those imaginary scenes, and several of the products have 'before' and 'after' advertisements.

The 132 Fighting Ships! (1964)

'3-D plastic classified pieces' in this complete game! Like others, its a basic game with secret set-up (use cereal boxes as a wall) and Helen of Toy rules.

What kind of idiots run my Bluesky account?

If one had asked me 'What superhero is most NYC?' I may have said

Doc Savage

The pulp hero had a resurgence of popularity decades back, and I link him to the Empire State Building.

When I asked my non-comic book reading spouse 'Which superhero is most NYC?', the reply was

Batman

<quote "Gotham is NYC">

Yes, Gotham in DC comics is not NYC, but it was clearly meant to be a version of it.

Which superohero is Most NYC?

If you go to NYC, it is clear its Spiderman. There is a wall of merch in Macy's, an impersonator in Times Square, etc.

The Thing is utterly absent. Cosplay is harder, but I saw an Optimus Prime, so no harder than that; its the lack of cultural currency.

Here is the cleverness behind 'exploding tanks' - the rubber band and a two-piece tank

Daily Mail Order Toy Soldiers <Until Christmas>

The memorable Tank Trap - with exploding (rubber band) tanks!

A tank is a crawling, armor skinned, fire spitting, man-eating monster that preys on any helpless enemy!

But it can be stopped with courage and daring

Written by Joanna Lee, there is a lot of Manchurian Candidate (1962).

The fake Race is found out by Jade ... with a kiss, saying 'There is only one Race Bannon'

The Jonny Quest episode Double Danger (1964) not only has an Evil Imposter Race, but the plot is Team Quest in Thailand for a hallucinogenic vine. The idea is long space trips are better if you are trippin'

Its 1977. You are making a nonviolent kids Saturday morning cartoon. When you think Batman, its Pow! Adam West. You don't know Black Lightning so DC shows you this cover of issue 1, mow on newstands - a violent blaxploitation character.

I would absolutely veto BL as to violent
December 6, 2025 at 5:43 PM
Speaking as a fan, I will surmise there *may* have been another element not mentioned

Super Friends was a kid friendly show for Saturday morning cartoons, in the mid 70s, when violence was a no-no.

Look at that cover of Black Lightning and see if you see a conflict with the needs of Super Friends

If you search for what happened, you will get answers like "HB didn't want to pay a bit more" or "licensing issues" or 'dispute with creator'. This is from a recent Facebook post by co-creator Jenny Blake Isabella: "I blame DC more than HB, which does not excuse HB's theft..."

While the All-New Superfriends Hour created several new heroes (e.g. Apache Chief) and retooled one from public domain (Rima), Black Vulcan is a stand-in for another brand new DC character, Black Lightning (earlier in 1977) by Jenny Black Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden.

Black Vulcan

This is a touchy topic

The character appeared in the premiere episode of the All-New Super Friends Hour in September 1977, in the segment "The Whirlpool", voiced by Buster Jones. The show was trying to be more diverse, and created several new characters to do so.

Here is a later ad for Woods Edge (often shared with Fighting Ships or Cannon Ball). The fun part is its completely new - now you see the Nazi's getting ambushed (Nazi insignia garbled). The game was simple, but kids did like the 88 (tiny) figures.

I enjoy how they drew the poor GI hanging on the wall with the Helen of Toy information. This is like Cyclops blowing up the X-Men logo on a comic book.

The figures are actually pretty nice, and you get rules and a sizeable playmat.

Another great imaginary scene

Woods Edge (1963) GI Battle Game for $1.00! Poised on a wooded slope overlooking a deserted town, all as peaceful as a postcard. Now you see the enemy moving in - this town has become an arena.

I stopped posting on Twitter a few weeks shy of two years ago. We had to wait for invites back then.

Bluesky has issues, but the 'Pros' far outweigh the 'Cons'. I'm
just a casual fan, who likes hanging out here with witty, knowledgeable, and just as geeky other fans.

Every day on Bluesky with my friends is like a party at stately Wayne manor.

I really wouldn't be here if not for the friendly people, with old friends and new, celebrating our passions. Bluesky has its issues (that overzealous 'adult content ' tag ), but thankful its here.

132 Roman Soldiers seems to go back to 1968 or so. Its possible Russ Heath even did this original ho-hum ad, but the colorful imaginative masterpiece comes from around 1973. Given the number of issues it appeared in, Heath's artwork was all over the Bronze age.

Daily Mail Order Toy Soldiers <Until Christmas>

My vote for the best mail-order toy soldier ad ever, and one that graced many Bronze age comics, is Russ Heath's version of 132 Roman Soldiers (in an 'imaginary battle scene' of Roman against Roman)

Just soak this one in. Amazing.

Scene from a Kelloggs Sugar Smacks cereal commercial with Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey (1959). The whole commercial's visuals is the art being drawn....and possibly not by Hanna Barbera. The voice over actor is Barney Philips (Twilight Zone diner martian)
