The 39 Steps. That scene, filmed almost 20 years into his Carlyle residency, was my first awareness of Short. Re the passage you read, Short certainly took his childhood manager’s shouted advice to heart;

…do his ebullient thing at the Carlyle. There is a great scene in Hannah and Her Sisters, where Mickey (Woody Allen) has taken a disgusted Holly (Dianne Wiest) to the Carlyle to hear Short, this scene in hilarious contrast to Holly’s choice of rock/punk club and the (uncredited) band…
