It was the first week of August and brutally hot, roughly 95 degrees. The hike up the steep steps didn't seem that far but considering my age and physical condition the palace nearly had one more sacrifice. Numerous smaller buildings surround the palace, as well as a Maya 'ball court'.

Xunantunich is an active archaeological site; there were multiple digs going while we were there. It's estimated that only about 30% of what is here is actually visible above ground. Stone markers left by the Maya show it was inhabited as of 630 AD and possibly another thousand years before. 3/4

I like to do the small studies to figure out the values, to test potential colors, and to practice drawing from the reference. I then did a somewhat larger 'test painting' to see if I liked the result of my plan. The foreground building became a mass of foliage in the final painting. 2/4
