"Although natural gas generation still provides more electricity than any other source in California..."
This is incorrect. If you include rooftop generation, solar is now the largest source.
Q1-Q3 2025
All Solar = 73 TWh
Gas = 54 TWh

One missing element for Spain is battery storage - but it looks like growth in this area may accelerate over the rest of the decade.

BESS will allow Spain to increase solar share by at least another 10%.

102.7 TWh up 6.4% Y-Y. Good results.
Nuclear output could surpass 400 TWh in 2025 - for the first time since 2015.

Also:
1) Solar/wind are faster than demand - big deal!
2) Nuclear will start contributing more during the rest of the decade.
3) If China has a down year economically (2025/2026), clean energy will displace a lot of coal.

Solar generation goes over 20,000 MW for the first time!
New record = 20,818 MW at 10:55 am on April 11th.
A big jump from the previous record - 19,624 MW.
Note: demand at 10:55 am was 19,217 MW - so solar provided over 100% of load!

I am on the road - and was "off the grid" so to speak 😀 earlier.
It looks like prices spiked between 8:35 and 9:20 am - I am not sure why.
Batteries were still discharging, and it looks like they did respond somewhat - note the bump starting at 8:45 am in the @gridstatus.io chart below.

California has multiple co-generation gas plants, including some at refineries, making it unlikely that gas generation can be reduced much further.
Until these plants are gone.
