These institutions served as leadership training and ideological indoctrination grounds for SS officer candidates, primarily those of the infamous Gestapo and the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service). Measuring approx. 40cm in height, the dual runic insignia of the SS can be seen fused together and clad in silver. The use of silver rather than the customary gold for a 'grand prize' was a conscious decision influenced by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler's apparent distaste for gold. He considered the metal to be "the leaven of the Jews" and even issued a decree prohibiting SS men from wearing gold jewelry (except in the case of wedding rings). Himmler envisioned the SS to be an elite paramilitary organization of ideological fighters, modeled upon religious knightly orders from history such as the Teutonic Knights.
