a blonde girl, Sandrilene Fa Toren, site in a dark storeroom, surrounded by wooden crates and sacks. The only light is coming from three threads that glow as she braids them. She has a slightly haggard appearance and a dejected expression on her face. In the Palace of Black Swans, Zakdin, capital of Hatar: Blue eyes wide, Lady Sandrilene fa Toren watched her near-empty oil lamp. Her small mouth quivered as the flame at the end of the wick danced and shrank, throwing grim shadows on the barrels of food and water that shared her prison. When that flame was gone, she would be without light in this windowless storeroom. "I'll go crazy," she said flatly. "When they come to rescue me, I'll be raving mad." She refused to admit that, with this room locked from the outside and hidden by magic, a rescue was hopeless. "I'll draw the mob away from here, far away," Pirisi had whispered through the keyhole, speaking in her native Tradertalk. "You'll be safe until the smallpox has run its course. Then I'll return for you." But her nurse had never returned. "If only I could catch it in something!" she cried. "Like Trader-wizards catch the winds in their nets" "A net is string," she interrupted herself. "And string is thread." She had thread in the workbasket she had grabbed when Pirisi dragged her from her room. The basket's contents had kept her from giving up completely before this, as she embroidered until her eyes refused to focus. "Uvumi," Sandry whispered in Tradertalk. She straightened the threads, one on each side, one in her lap. Closing her eyes, she found that she was much calmer when she couldn't see her work or the lamp. She didn't really need to see, to do something as easy as a braid. In her mind, her threads gleamed brightly. They called specks of light from all around her and tangled them in their strands. The flickering lamp went out; she opened her eyes. The wick was dead and black. Through and around her braid, light shone steadily, filling the room with a soft, pearly glow. "Did I know I could do that?" she whispered. The braid-light wavered. "All right," she said, gathering the threads once more. "But I have to sleep, you know." She wiped her eyes on her sleeve.

The streets are hard to leave behind, and He's still learning to put down roots instead of fighting for survival. Briar has a magical connection with the plants around him, a connection deepened by steady consistent care. As he starts to care for his plant friends, he slowly but surely begins to care for the human friends he's made, too. - Character art: Tris, a chubby girl with pale skin, glasses, and a lion's mane of red hair. She's wearing a hand-me-down blue dress and carrying a thick book Text: Whenever Tris's temper flared up, things happened. Hail, rain, even lightning sprang to her defense, putting those who anger her in danger! This led to her being passed from one relative to another, finally ending up at Winding circle as her last chance. Now that she's settling in, Tris is learning to control her emotions, and harnessing the forces of nature she draws her magical power from. She is carrying a wooden staff capped with bronze, and is wearing all red— a symbol of mourning in trader culture. Text: Daja is the sole survivor of the shipwreck of the Trader's Third Ship Kisubo, with her bad luck branding her a Trangshi. In Trader culture, Trangshi are a symbol of utmost bad luck, a danger to everyone around them. After being excommunicated from Trader society and coming to Winding Circle, Daja feels caught between two worlds; Caught between her growing power as a smith mage, and the culture she grew up in othering those who create. Character art: Sandry, a pale skinned girl wearing her blonde hair in two braids. She is also in mourning, wearing all black. Text: When a smallpox outbreak hit the island her family was visiting, Sandry’s world was turned upside down. Locked in a dark storeroom as riots raged outside, the only light she had came from thread that glowed as she braided it. After being found and brought to Winding Circle, Sandry’s grown fiercely protective of her new family. Her power comes from weaving, be it cotton thread, wool fibers, or pure magic!

The sketches got the ball rolling in my brain, I'm gonna be drawing scenes from Circle of Magic as a personal project! (Similar to my junior thesis at SVA.)

To that end, I wanted to put together some character introductions to refer back to as this goes on.

As she's looking around, she gets the uneasy feeling the house isn't thrilled to be changing owners. A young boy is attempting to mimic his parents by making a drink with a cocktail shaker. Unfortunately, the only ingredient being used is soda! His mom is running towards him in horror. Two children staring into a locker, focusing on a hastily scribbled note that is NOT supposed to be there.

After accidentally helping to release the spirit of the house's former owner, Aldous Mcmartin, Olive develops a plan to banish the shadowy spirit once and for all. She sets up a circle of mirrors, lures him into it, and uses them to amplify the light from a camping flashlight to blow him away. Text this illustration is based on, reading: Squinting, Olive could just make out the figure from Mr. Mcmartin’s self-portrait— something dark, gaunt, and twisted, something barely human trapped inside that circle of light. In the shadow that should have been its face Olive could see two spots reflecting the light two eyes that looked right into hers. [...] The light was erasing Aldous McMartin. Brightness ate away at his feet, his legs, his long, knobby fingers, his skeletal jaw. When only a mouth and eyes were left, he let out a roar that echoed inside the attic, shaking the dust from the walls, tattling out through the old grey stones. And then every trace of him was gone.

While investigating the secrets of the house, Olive has ventured into a painting depicting the street the house is on, from roughly 100 years ago. As she walks through it, former residents of the neighborhood come out of their houses, warning Olive that they've been trapped in this painting, and the same couod happen to her if she stays in there too long. While traversing a picture of a lake at sunset, Olive finds and puts on a locket she finds under the lake's water. This causes Horatio, a talking cat belonging to the magical house's former owner, to become nervous. Some secrets are best left undiscovered... Olive has discovered a pair of magical spectacles that allow her to travel into the paintings that line the house's halls, this is her first time entering them. The hall stretched away from her in two directions, dwindling into darkness at both ends. Dim light from one hanging lamp outlined the frames of the pictures on the walls.

2 years late, but Im finally posting one of my favorite projects!

This was from my junior year at SVA— We had to adapt a book without using any preexisting visual references. I chose the first of the Books of Elsewhere novels by Jacqueline West, a series I've loved since elementary school! (thread)
