Enterprise software has been on autopilot for too long, vendors dictating products as solutions, low-code platforms promising shortcuts, offshore arbitrage over expertise.

@addyosmani.bsky.social reminding us why critical thinking is more important than ever.

In the past, when options were limited, architects focused on business outcomes. Ask about technical details and you'd get two answers: "it depends" or "that's an implementation detail."

What is a Tech Bubble Anyway?

IMO the 99 dot-com bubble was tech bros pumping tech bros for IPOs. Today feels similar except the goal isn't IPO, it's endless growth to attract more PE money. Circular economies manufacturing fake traction.

Very interesting discussion, Thoughtworks Technology Radar shows GenAI dominating, this reflects what clients want at the coal face. But Fowler comes off as cautious, good for greenfield/legacy exploration, needs constant supervision. The market is bullish. The veterans see a bubble.

Most IT solutions are corporate painkillers, quick fixes that hide symptoms (silos, inefficiency, slow delivery) while ignoring root causes (culture, people, process). And like painkillers, they’re addictive, expensive, and their side-effects are often long lasting and worse than the original pain.

Many failed SAP projects came down to tier-1 creating ambitious blueprints → tier-3 couldn't deliver

Today the 'blueprint' isn't high-level guidance, it's a detailed 5R list with tech specs on exactly what to rebuild, retain, or retire ..

I'm hearing tier-3 partners are pushing back. Too risky

Just finished Episode 3 of #Pluribus Unlike Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul where you quickly warm to Walter and Saul, with Carol I find it easier to empathize with "the others", they're going out of their way to be nice and friendly and she refuses to read the room.

Walked into a Tricentis testing session by accident yesterday. “Quality Engineering” sounded cool. IT types were eating up the before and after metrics.

Meanwhile devs take a backseat and real quality gets lost in planning and tooling.

Post coming: “An ounce of prevention beats a pound of procure”
