Yup! Wicked started as a novel, was adapted into a smash hit Broadway musical in the 2000s, and it took this long to bring to the screen.
The original Elphaba and Glinda were Idina Mendel and Kristin Chenowith, respectively. It was incredible.

Technically it’s not a sequel, it’s the second act of the broadway show. It’s all one big story split into two movies. Your confusion is justified.
