Turns out I can buy an adjustable one off Ebay for $19. Parts for a non-adjustable home-built would have been $26, not counting getting housemate to bust out the jigsaw and the drill.

To quote the cook: "until the squash starts to get kinda translucent and it mashes when I smush it with a spoon...couldn't say for sure in minutes, maybe 10?" That is for 1cm squash cubes. Lid on and off in turns to balance steaming with not being waterlogged.
