Welp...so far I've:

- Shortened the lifespan of the new SD card by attempting to restore the backup image three times unsuccessfully

- Shortened the lifespan of the new SD card further by doing a fresh OS image/install twice

- Admitted defeat, as indicated by the new Google Doc lab book...

I did get over a year out of it...but I somehow expected it to last far longer, because it was a 128GB card from a reputable brand, and I was only using a few GB of it at most.

Maybe it's not that I didn't get all of the wear-levelling out of it...maybe I really hammered all the extra capacity? 🤔

Oh, and the two incomes are usually around £50k. Each!

It is frustrating how many "real people" examples are things like "how will our two-income household possibly cope with going from four annual foreign holidays down to three?", and it's usually so far out of touch that I can't even be bothered to spit out my coffee any more when I hear these things.

Indeed...a board game that depends on active servers like a modern multiplayer PC/console game...

(I don't know how they've implemented it, but I suppose an AI capable of basic 2D line drawing recognition could feasibly be baked into the app, so it could continue to work offline.)

I considered making it Ceefax instead of Teletext, but 1) part of me felt that the Beeb of this alternate reality might not have been using it, 2) Ceefax, as it stands in 2025, was actually (once again) unaffected by the outage (i.e. @nmsni.co.uk's NMS Ceefax)

bsky.app/profile/nmsn...
I'm getting tired of saying this, but in times of global "someone else's computer" outages, Ceefax remains online from a noisy server in someone's attic.

The need for reinvention is losing its grip on me, which is somewhat ironic given that the midlife crisis is such a stereotypically perfect time for such a thing.

The new me is the old me, and now that I've found my way back to me, I don't want to lose me again. I can't afford to.

I was psyching myself up to use a heat gun on the front panel pins, assuming I'd bent and broken them away from the solder somehow, since I knew it wasn't the switch nor the PSU (wouldn't turn on with a known working PSU and case!)

Thank goodness I was going to try a jumper-based CMOS clear first!
November 14, 2025 at 4:58 PM
I did clock the bare pins, but I've had this motherboard so long, I didn't think any more of it, since some motherboards have bare pins you only add the jumper to when clearing the CMOS, or the "stowed position" does nothing.

In this case, a missing jumper makes it present as a dead motherboard! 😮

I actually find it unbearable, and I don't mean that in a flippant way. It's an immense struggle to read, and I haven't yet found an option to at least reduce the width. But the TV was free, so...

It's more of a quick demo/check that I'm getting the same teletext in two different rooms.

Webfax is now house-wide ☺️

Already done by @nmsni.co.uk, although I'd say usably ☺️
