This first week of sampling alpine lakes in mountainous heights had everything... snow, sunburn, frogs, sheep, marmots, insects and crustaceans, and of course, preliminary insights on the microbes that live in those extreme environments. Looking forward to what we'll find in the coming weeks🧑🏼‍🔬🦠

New preprint! We generate 40 new high-quality microsporidian genomes from infected arthropod hosts that were sequenced to create reference genomes by the Darwin Tree of Life project. 8 of our genomes are chromosome-level, and we’re able to generate Hi-C data for 7! 🧬

Forty New Genomes Shed Light on Sexual Reproduction and the Origin of Tetraploidy in Microsporidia
Microsporidia are single-celled, obligately intracellular parasites with growing public health, agricultural, and economic importance. Despite this, Microsporidia remain relatively enigmatic, with man...

New study between @teessideuni.bsky.social and @ufresearch.bsky.social, led by Cheyenne Stratton, explores the genomics of the #crayfish Nosema - a group of #microsporidian #parasites.

We characterise several new species with relevance to ongoing bioinvasions!

Microsporidia and invertebrate hosts: genome-informed taxonomy surrounding a new lineage of crayfish-infecting Nosema spp. (Nosematida) - Fungal Diversity
The Microsporidia, an often overlooked fungal lineage, exhibit increasing diversity and taxonomic understanding with the use of genomic techniques. They are obligate parasites infecting a diversity of...

Ecological impacts of biological invasions are so numerous & diverse, it's a mess
+, we often mix mechanisms & impacts, causes & consequences
So, we created a structured typology of these impacts.
Now that it's done, it looks simple & obvious 🤓
