TL;DR: “Solidarity with Pollock as a theorist and socialist—a living example of intellect at odds with domination—was infinitely greater inspiration for Dialectic of Enlightenment than Pollock’s theory of capitalism itself.”

Masha Scott also offers a kind of minimal definition of a good social system in her replies to all the qs from Tillich & co. abt “existential angst”: in a society in which all women can finally read Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, none of them will ever have to live like Anna Karenina!

Masha Scott’s defense of the Soviet system from the “sophisticated bourgeois” intellectuals is so successful that Löwe & Tillich (both of whom want a kind of religious socialism) are genuinely shaken by it, while Pollock (!) defends her (paraphrasing Lichtenberg on the moral law)

again—A&H’s 40s work is maybe best explained as a crit inversion of Freud’s “Moses”!
“…this Urgeschichte cannot be a psychological account, as Freud attempted…; rather, we must seek out its origin in archaic, but socially real, movements.” Adorno, ‘40)

one of the clearest definitions any of them ever give of “dialectical anthropology” & it’s in an aside in a letter complaining about colleagues that Horkheimer wrote at the top of: “confidential! destroy after reading!” lol
