If you want to study statins, then you need to start with the key studies, listed here:
medicurious.substack.com/p/no-96-why-...
January 3, 2025 at 1:45 PM
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20031900/

#JUPITER NNT to prevent death, MI or stroke was 29 for 5 years of statin primary prevention.

Some of these NNT, look odd. Like A higher NNT for those with a higher BMI?

Family hx has the lowest NNT, ? Genetic predisposition

#HOPE-3 trial result doesn't make sense to me.

People with more healthy lifestyles benefited more from taking a statin that those with less health lifestyles?

That seems odd. ? More adherence to taking the medication.
December 31, 2024 at 12:17 PM
>3k papers and 250 trials of #statins and #primary prevention on PubMed
December 31, 2024 at 11:20 AM
>70k #PubMed citations for #statins
>8k trials
Thousands of reviews

Surely no one has read all of these? Becoming an "expert" in only a single drug is challenging.

Minimalist and lifestyle, or maximalist and mounjaro?

Another great post from #sensiblemedicine

Good article on @doctors.net about re-introduction of secondary care rating and league tables.

Anyone have any strong opinions on whether it will work?

The thought that strikes me is "what gets measured, gets managed"...

My 1st paper and the one I am most proud of is:

journals.lww.com/annalsofsurg...

This project took me and my house mate months. We did this rather than revising for our finals.

It's been cited 30 times and we hope, improved the quality of trials looking at surgical infections.

Building on the curriculum project...

asmepublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

We developed the Birmingham medical leadership society.

We knew that teaching space was limited. So we decided to organise our own extra-curricular stuff. And publish it!

I was pleased to be selected as an #FMLM student rep while at med school. I like to think I brought the #Collaborative research model to #MedLeadership

We built a team that reviewed the curriculum at every UK #MedSchool and used this to campaign for more teaching.

This was the 1st and main paper from the #RIFTstudy.

academic.oup.com/bjs/article/...

Again, this was a labour of love. It was thrilling to see it make the national news and be a driver for change across the #NHS.

The #RIFTstudy was my 1st time designing a study and publishing a protocol.

Something I thought was really cool was table 1. I made by comparing different guidelines on the diagnosis of appendicitis. It was the only head to head comparison at the time. #WMRC

The 1st paper that I am truly proud of is:
www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Why?

Because it wasn't published until 9 years after my intercalated BMedSc.

It's my only proper bench project. It was a labour of love. It took grit and patience.

It's finally getting cited!

The vast majority of my citations are for #collaborative projects that I was lucky to be a part of.
Working with great teams, like @starsurg @wmrc @rift
I learnt a huge amount from these projects and would highly recommend being a part of the team. Start small. Learn. Take on my responsibility.

If you haven't set up your @googlescholar.bsky.social then you really should.

It keeps track of your papers and citations. It's easy to use and free!

Speaking at the BAMSoc conference last week made me reflect on my academic work over the last few years.

I also realised I need to work on the disseminsation. So here is a thread of some of my favourite bits...
