Ice covers about half of the lake. The trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) and sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) have fled for warmer climes. But I did see a bald eagle (Haliaetus leucocephalus) cruise by on that day.

It's remarkable how much #FenRestoration (and other #conservation work) comes down to the repetition of these two simple tasks. Scything and raking. Maybe not glamorous (especially the raking!), but vital to controlling rank vegetation and letting other plants thrive.

It's #NationalTreeWeek and yesterday we planted 800 trees along the edges of a newly rebuilt bridleway. It'll stablise the work and create a lovely mixed corridor of woodland in years to come. Oak, aspen, alder and grey willow pegs went in.

What a day for #sphagnum moss planting 😁🌿 Despite the wind, rain and mist our hardy bunch of volunteers, including His Excellency and Lady Lorimer, got stuck in and planted hundreds of sphagnum plugs. This will help to keep the peat wet and eventually start to form new peat 🤞

Our new mechanically created wetland restoration areas are already transforming the landscape! 🌿 Just a month after the diggers left, these beautiful wetlands are drawing in water-loving birds like redshank, teal, and even snipe - plus a flurry of dragonflies and damselflies. Rewilding in action! 🌱💧

Recently our fab Adur & Worthing Hit Squad removed Sycamore dominating Cissbury Fields to make way for native tree species which will benefit local biodiversity. If you're free one Saturday morning a month, we'd love you to get involved!

I visited Abbey Wood in Killarney National Park over the weekend where a massive job of rhododendron removal has been undertaken in the last year or so with the help of Killarney Moutain Meitheal. The area is now deer fenced to allow recovery - very impressive work!

In my opinion, Detroit Lion Jahmyr Gibbs is the most exciting player in the NFL. Check this out.

Another dam down! Earlier this month, partners including The Nature Conservancy removed the Becker Pond Dam on an unnamed tributary to Schenob Brook in Mt Washington. With the dam gone, natural riverine processes are restored, improving habitat for coldwater species like Eastern brook trout

Autumn in the Lye Valley.
Our scything team have done a great job in cutting large parts of both the east and west SSSI. Lots still to do though, and we've now got a huge backlog of cut material waiting to be taken off the fen.

Early morning start to dig some
modest scrapes in two fields at Athelney. It might seem from our recent posts that we do loads of digging and planting, but actually this is pretty much the first thing we’ve done like this here. After this it’s back to its own thing!
