When I moved to Portland from San Jose. the winters drove me crazy. After a couple years, my body adjusted and it was no big deal, except for a little arthritis on windy days.

But moss is a real problem for some roofs. Not all, judging by this conversation:

Moss on Roofs? Actual Problem or not? Any actual evidence to support?

Your mentioning insects reminded me of the first apartment I had in Portland, which overlooked a mossy roof. Birds would root around in the moss for insects, an activity which fascinated my cats.

Uh, no, that's not how it happened. July was originally Quintilis (fifth month) and August was Sextilis. (sixth month). These confusing number names are a relic of time when the year began in March.

Major Strasser is obviously Trump.

Here in Portland, you see moss all over the places, especially on buildings. I find the sight quite consoling. I'm told that moss helps fight air pollution and slow runoff.

But I also hear homeowners complain that moss is destroying their roofs.

Graves had many weird theories, so take this with a grain of salt.

Important detail: originally the caduceus had ribbons, not snakes. According to Graves, the ribbons changed to snakes because of the conflation of the Caduceus with the rod of Asclepius.

The caduceus is the symbol of Hermes, who had many roles besides being the god of commerce. Robert Graves claimed that there were competing healing cults for Asclepius and Hermes. Both their temples were places you might go for medical help.

Not an expert on Greek mythology or its symbolism, but I think the distinction between the Rod of Asclepius and the Caduceus might not be as straightforward as that.

In hindsight, Obama hiring a banker as his chief of staff was the first sign he wasn't quite the gutsy hero I thought he was.

Alas, our relationship with the Islamic world has changed since that movie came out.
