(asking because I have a similar problem, and finding a good FX5200/5500 PCI 128 bit has been really difficult lately)

Faster or equivalent to a FX 5200/5500 PCI (64 or 128 bit)?

It is, unfortunately, something that has been going on YouTube for a while now (Nick Nimmin, among others, has covered this subject a couple of years ago: youtu.be/cRVhrR1ZPqE). Crazy that you have to "opt out" of something like this...

Nice catch! $100 for one of these (specially one in good condition) is not bad at all!!

I was laughing (crying inside) when I saw that you were going to try to install Red Alert 3 on it... As someone who has been through this BS with this EA game in the past, I was curious to see if you would find a way to run it on XP (bypassing the dead activation server). God, I hate EA so much...

Is this one of those "Epia" Via boards (with BGA chips)?

Now that GPU prices are finally down to earth, of course "some bubble" would screw up the market again for some other PC part...

Here we go again... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Good thinking right there! No audience can be more gullible!

I can't help but think there might be entire money laundry operations behind some of these Ebay sellers...

That reminds me of Silent Hunter. I remember playing the crap out of that thing in the MS-DOS days... Sub sims are indeed a heck of a rabbit hole!

Hardware incantations... No point in trying to understand the reasons why these things happen the way they do 😂

Since VIA was not in the same position of strength that AMD was at the time (with its huge x64 architecture win in the mid 00's, that forced Intel to sign a patent cross-license agreement allowing AMD to survive and thrive), they were effectively forced to quit their x86 ambitions at that point.
November 19, 2025 at 8:55 PM
And still on the Intel anticompetitive tactics subject, Intel did put an effective block at VIA's attempt to continue the C3 (and C7) development, when they didn't renew the required x86 licenses to VIA... I don't think it was a coincidence they did that at the same time they were releasing Atom.
November 19, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Of course, my memory might be betraying me here (it's been 2 decades after all 😆) as far as the performance of the C3 was at the time and how it could have evolved if it had had wide market adoption. I guess pitting a C3 with a contemporary Atom would be a nice exercise in "alternative history"...
November 19, 2025 at 8:31 PM
And is in that context that I think the Intel market dominance was a deterrent to these types of innovations on the x86 side of things... In the end Intel lost regardless, since we are now firmly in an Arm world (as far as sheer number of devices, mostly mobile, is concerned).
November 19, 2025 at 8:25 PM
I just wonder what would have been if all the netbooks that had crappy Atom cpus in them had something like C3 chips instead... Always interesting to think what would that alternative timeline be like (maybe x86 would have retained more of its relevance and avoid losing the mobile market to Arm).
November 19, 2025 at 8:21 PM
The VIA CPUs of that era are fascinating! An interesting meld of x86 power with Arm efficiency. They never had a real chance in the market of course... Intel's 'bruteness' at the time wouldn't allow it (bruteness that almost broke AMD, which was much better positioned than Cyrix or VIA ever were).

"On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" Matthew 7:22–23

If it was widely available for purchase I would understand... But why this enormous marketing blitz for a limited run product, that is 'unobtanium' from the get go ?
