You may not have heard of the Limpkin, but chances are you’ve HEARD it before! 🔊 This bird’s calls are so iconic, they’ve been used as background ambience in Tarzan movies, and even as Buckbeak the hippogriff’s cries in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!

Esmé Soler, Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician, shares the loud, sweaty, exhausting reality of stabilizing oiled Western Grebes during a busy response. With stabilization behind them, the focus has shifted to conditioning – helping each grebe regain strength and waterproofing.

Pictured here is Alice holding a grebe during the 1971 Standard Oil Spill, the event that would inspire her to found International Bird Rescue just months later.
In honor of #WorldKindnessDay, help us reach our goal, now matching up to $25,000 thanks to our anonymous donors!

Oiled grebes who spend extended time stranded on land often develop secondary injuries. We’re also seeing birds in active molt, growing brand new feathers that are delicate and difficult to wash without damage.
💙 Your help is urgently needed to give them the expert care they deserve.

Oil works against a bird’s anatomy, rendering it vulnerable to the elements. Even the smallest amount can be fatal if left untreated.
