Reviewing what I've read over the past three months for this SF course (also Samatar's The Practice, the Horizon and the Chain). It's been a great semester, despite also being challenging

Anyways, the point is just to say that "realism" can take on a lot of forms, can be endlessly complicated. There's no reason to get hung up on visual realism when it can take place in the text.
November 22, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Of course there are exceptions to everything, like Bendis' Jinx/Goldfish/Torso...and more, I'm sure. This page from Jinx shows how tracings can reduce that index of realism back to something more palatable so that the page can work it's magic. (Otoh, we're sort of back where this thread started...)

We also do have examples of realism in comics: fumetti! These are fun too, but they also reveal how artificial everything is because of the performers themselves. As things become more photographic, they weirdly feel less real. Something similar happens with animanga too, imo. Arrested movement.

That's not to say that realism can't happen in the art; just that there are a million ways to depict it. It doesn't have to be about realistic figures; it can be realistic clothes on top of cartoony forms; detailed backgrounds; visual clutter that enhances characterization; a zillion things
