Trompe l'oeil ceiling frescoes by Benvenuto Tisi also called Il Garofalo, The Treasure Hall, Palazzo Costabili, Ferrara. Along the sides of the ceiling it´s painted a large balcony where Oriental rugs are hanging out: a gallery of characters, many of them with musical instruments, leaning from the balcony to show the observers their love for the arts, music and poetry. The fresco is almost a showcase of the aristocracy of the time with portraits of rare elegance. In an evocative scenography, behind the balcony a turquoise sky, with a gazebo filled with branches of fruit, knotted around the balustrade.

🦒 Modern art? Nope, these are charred scroll fragments that were part of a gift of several scrolls that King Ferdinand of Naples had sent to George IV in England in exchange for a royal giraffe for his private zoo.

🎨 Russia’s Catherine the Great was so transfixed by the so-called Raphael Loggia in Rome's Apostolic Palace that she had a replica made in St Petersburg, where it still remains today as part of the Hermitage Museum.

🦃 Two Venetian bronze turkeys, late 16th–early 17th c. The turkey became a status symbol in Venice: a sumptuary law of 1557 banned its meat from all tables but those of patricians.

🥛 For #tilesontuesday a detail of The Milkmaid by Vermeer showing a foot warmer with blue and white porcelain tiles on either side of it.

Being #Dutch, I was always told the tiles were to hide the moisture which was (is?) typical in Dutch canal houses.

For #mosaicmonday the exquisite marble mosaic inlay floor of the Cathedral of Siena. We look forward to filming there in early 2026!

The inlays were traced out on white marble slabs using a chisel & drill & then filled in w/ black stucco, a technique called “graffito”.

Vasari states that the four prophets in Chigi’s Chapel in Santa Maria della Pace were painted by Timoteo Viti, a childhood friend who trained in Giovanni Santi’s Urbino workshop and eventually succeeded him as Urbino court painter. The image shows a drawing by Raphael on the left and on the right a detail of the finished fresco.
