In California, where the National Guard was first deployed this year by the White House, several soldiers who recently returned from the Los Angeles activation said they were angry but unsurprised by the attack in Washington, D.C. “I knew this would happen,” said one veteran National Guard member whose service included a combat stint in Iraq before he was sent to Los Angeles this summer to back up federal immigration agents.

Just last week, a federal judge ruled the National Guard deployment in Washington, particularly with many guard members from out of state, was likely unlawful. The order blocked the deployment, but the judge paused the order from taking effect for three weeks to minimize operational disruptions. The order was set to go into effect on Dec. 11.

USCIS is dedicated to ensuring that all aspects of the naturalization process comply with federal law. After reviewing the jurisdiction of certain New York county courts under the Immigration and Nationality Act, we have determined that these courts do not meet the statutory requirements to conduct naturalization ceremonies. As a result, USCIS will transition from judicial to administrative ceremonies to ensure compliance with the law. Aliens scheduled for ceremonies at these courts will be rescheduled, and their naturalization process will continue.
