Another good book from @reaktionbooks.bsky.social .
Took me back to the world of crusades and troubadours.
Very good on the way the legend of our Lionhearted absentee essentially French monarch grew over centuries.
Made me rack my brain for children’s crusader novels - can anyone help?

A Christmas bonus book of the year.
I am proud to have one short poem in this lovely book but am ever prouder to be in the company of so many excellent writers.
So please do read this poem by Paul Short, which is far from seasonal whimsy.

Another book of the year.
My fascination with Alexander began when I was nine when an aunt bought me a book of famous battles. Mary Renault and Robin Lane Fox added depth later.
This fascinating study unraveled my picture.
A really good study of what we think we know. Gripping historiography

Book of the year 3.
Beautifully written combination of memoir, history, and nature, set where mountains, countries and lakes meet in Northern Greece.
With bears and pelicans too.
I had to take this opportunity to boost with the American edition on the way.

Books of the Year 2.
I was fortunate to be able to attend the launch of this beautiful and moving volume.
Mainly a reflection on the effect of military service during World War 2 on her father and its cascading generational impact, this is empathetic, poignant and will speak to many

My books of the year. Part 1

This will be on a lot of lists , and quite rightly. It is not only a beautiful book to have, full of high quality illustrations of birds and plants, but is the best appreciation of White’s life, times and achievement that I have ever come across .

I am enjoying this from @reaktionbooks.bsky.social .
Interweaving Auden’s life with his changing approach to poetry and his philosophical/ theological journey.
Helping to enrich my reading of his poems.
Published next year.

Swanage this afternoon
November 29, 2025 at 4:56 PM
I have befriended my local stream.
Barely a mile long it used to have a mill on it, and before Swanage was devastated as a bathing resort by the Victorians appears to have formed its own small estuary.

Great book talk in Swanage Library this morning.
Got me thinking about whether geology is a particular gift to the world which would not have been possible without the Industrial Revolution putting holes all over the place🦋
