Want a break from the budget? Good news! Across Europe, there are zebra crossings at side roads. They make it clear that people walking and wheeling have priority, rather than stopping every few metres. In the UK, governments haven't officially allowed them - until today 🧵

Train 2: Rotterdam to Utrecht. The screen keeps telling you not to put your bags on the seats, but the racks/space under seats it directs you to are tiny. A mark down for rolling stock!

On our way to Utrecht for a month! Not our most ambitious train journey, but definitely our most exciting trip.

In 2000, @englishheritage.bsky.social ran some sort of promotion to sign young people up, offering a voucher for your children to attend for free in 2025. My dad has kept it all that time, and today I went to the incredible Eltham Palace.

Hoi, Utrecht! In 31 days' time, I should be packing my bags to spend a month working from Utrecht. While I'm there, I'd love to meet people I can learn from - working in transport, spatial planning or politics. Do you know someone I should meet? Please put me in touch!

Lovely to show @chrismcdonaldmp.bsky.social round the hub. You can park your bike securely, get showered, get an MOT, pick up a cheap refurbished cycle, get advice on routes or join a ride yourself. Chris would like to get @activetraveleng.bsky.social along sometime to learn from the OG!

About a decade ago, the 1️⃣st active travel hub in the country opened in Stockton. We've now replicated them around the country. Stay tuned for the 200th anniversary 👀😅

200 years ago this very year, the 1️⃣st public railway to use steam engines opened here.

The Roomba and Bucklebury are getting on just fine, thanks for asking!

I'm fielding suggestions for good mugs ☕ This was my favourite mug, and it's broken. It's just a cheap one which came with some stroopwafels, but it's light, slightly curved at the bottom and has a thick enough rim that it doesn't clink on your teeth. Go!

Despite there literally being a song warning against going to Ilkley Moor with the wrong apparel, I came here baht waterproof trousers. It hailed.

The English Devolution White Paper suggested that, generally, local authorities should have a population of over 500,000. There's no suggestion that London boroughs will also be reorganised, but it is interesting to see their sizes.

Introducing Bucklebury (black and white) and Minnie (black)! We picked them up on Friday from the brilliant Celia Hammond.

It's old news that The Cut has become such a lovely street for eating since the through traffic was removed.

What I *didn't* know was that I can sit in the sun eating tapas and admiring this feline bookseller 🐈

Pretty cool that Napoleon III fundraised for this statue by Mornington Crescent

It honestly cheers me seeing the Shard lit up Christmassy at this time of year. I know it's corporate and building the brand, but things done primarily for joy are too few and far between.
