Every time Watanabe sings his song, I cry.

I hope you get to see Ikiru. It is a beautiful film that has touched me deeply.

It could so easily have been an overly sentimental or mawkish film. But it doesn’t shy away from moments of Watanabe not being a perfect father or the fact that his change in behaviour is off-putting to there people who encounter him. And it has a cynical edge (including the second to last scene).

Ikiru is about a man who finds out he is dying and realizes he hasn’t lived. It makes me think of what it means to live a meaningful life, what it means to live a good life, and ultimately what is means to live, which is something I struggled with for many many years.

Ikiru also has a ton of other regular Kurosawa actors in it, including many who were in Seven Samurai. Always enjoy seeing Bokuzen Hidari pop up!

People rightfully talk about Kurosawa’s partnership with Toshiro Mifune but more needs to be said about a similar film partnership with Takashi Shimura. He is incredible here & throughout his other films with Kurosawa you see his versatility as an actor and how amazing he is in such different roles.

I think I saw it first in my early 20s. It had a profound effect on me and I still feel it today even while being at a completely different stage in my life.
