This is great - only 2/3 thru but this lost 93 yr old novel has more to say about AI than recent fiction.

A tale of an ape raised as human shows we just can’t translate meaning and motive across such different beings - even (especially) when outward expectations appear to align

And Barking and Dagenham Libraries with a pioneering service of GP access within libraries - on a drop in basis to reach those who are less likely to feel able to go to a GP surgery.

Has opened out to much broader pop up services including massage / barbers etc

At London libraries conference - hearing from @lewisham.gov.uk libraries about the impact of one of @librariesconnected.bsky.social and @artscouncilengland.bsky.social microgrants.
Great initiative to develop reading for pleasure through screen free audio readers - really child first approach.

This morning’s working music is Xenakis - music generated with the help of an 1960s IBM computer.

But the capacity to intrigue and surprise by generating new forms, patterns and sounds sets it miles apart from anything today’s AIs create.

Fantastic to be here at @bradfordlitfest.bsky.social opening - it’s in the stunning Bradford Live.

Cllr Liz Green talking to Isobel Hunter about how libraries can influence change with current obstacles

She advocates direct engagement with councillors - invite them to events and so working across the structures and silos of local gov.

Some brilliant outcomes of the youth engagement network here - the approach definitely does work:

Particularly 100% felt listened to - something that’s typically a huge issue for government and gov services

About their youth engagement network, how it works and what they tell us about libraries

Great fundamentals here on what it’s based on

Final session of the @thefabians.bsky.social summit - leader of the education select committee: @helenhayes.bsky.social

Some really strong commitments to making things better but obvs no new news before tomorrow’s spending review.

Big - and sooo much needed - focus on children’s social care.

The excitement mounts - looking forward to hearing @allymcgovern.bsky.social and get sense of how libraries can fit into the governments missions for employment.

I've put my #StrongerThings thread into a linked article for easier reading. It captures just a small fraction of the brilliant insight but there are some gems from the speakers.
An excellent day - thank you to the excellent team at @wearenewlocal.bsky.social

And now the rockstar moment - @hilarycottam.bsky.social in conversation with Jonathan Heawood.

Her new book (the work we need) is on sale at the conf and looks brilliant.

And we’re back to the main stage for a final sum up from @jesstud.bsky.social and Katie Kelly before the final keynote

Katie mentions we need leaders who are “Chaos Pilots” - navigating through uncertainty with confidence, bringing people with us while keeping them safe

Evie John from Inner Circle consulting.

• we can’t get overwhelmed by challenges within our organisations
• we can’t equate national government with ‘central’ government - the opportunities for nationally distributed government are huge

This is key for libraries given the huge internal challenges

Hearing from @indyjohar.bsky.social about increased volatility as we head to 3 deg warmer.

We exist at intersection of localism and planetary relationships.

Need to be able to think in terms of multiple beneficiaries of our actions - again back to measuring value across different stakeholders.
June 3, 2025 at 9:40 AM
Ooh - @cormacrussell.bsky.social up next - he’s been brilliant at our seminars.

He’s starting very on-brand - coproducing his keynote!

Am going to be sharing my takeaways for the Library sector from @wearenewlocal.bsky.social #StrongerThings 2025 conference in this thread throughout the day.

It’s certainly very grand in here.

We didn’t win but brill to see such appreciation & recognition of the work that East of England libraries carried out with @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social

OTOH we did get to see @rummage.bsky.social win for the work that inspired Wicked Little Letters!

Another great example of libraries articulating how funding is multiplied into broader benefit from @librariesunlimited.bsky.social

This needs a national framework - again this shows if we reduce library funding we just shifts costs elsewhere (here to NHS)

Today's our joint Commercial and Regional Development team meeting today - at the lovely @wolvescouncil.bsky.social Central Library - a gem of a library!
We're trying an 'unmeeting' where we all bring and prioritise agenda items as a group🤞

I’m always wary of these “happiest places to live” articles but willing to give this credit for considering libraries and communities, and having some lovely things to say about the National Library of Wales - which truly is one of the worlds great libraries.
