Hyperfixates on hobbies and local things. Loyal but anxious. You can either find me inside making sourdough/reading/crafting or outside walking/biking and calling out infrastructure failures. Walking on IG as speedhumpme
Today’s guessing game of the day: Where am I? So far on IG the sign you can see has managed to confuse a lot of people.

Nearby St. Mary of Victories has avoided any issues from the downtown fire but they are working with St. Louis Fire Department to prevent frozen pipes due to the cold in the midst of the power outages here.

I knew I needed a few streets in this area south of downtown and I hurried to do them last Tuesday because I doubted they’d survive the winter. I was out past sunset trying to walk these blocks. #STLmade indeed.

Indeed! My goal of my walk today was to finish roads south of Market between Jefferson and 18th.

I have my suspicions about which building this is (I've been walking here regularly the past 2 weeks) but I suspect this weekend is going to be full of vacant house fires

Today’s “where am I?” of the day.

Since I walk so many places, I should really post more photos here. Guess the neighborhood (and bonus points for the street)

Posting about the toilets the pope may have used over on IG lost me 1 follower but gained me 3 so my work here is done. I try to keep the speedhumpme account a mix of pedestrian advocacy, history, fun facts, curiosity, and (as the name suggests) the rough or crude parts of the city.

Cool, so Interco Plaza can stay a park and not parking then.

It is November. We’ve already had a hard freeze. It’s 6 months after the tornado and counting. And the “Chief Recovery Office” for the city needed a committee to say things we’ve all known for months. www.stlmag.com/news/city-to...

It’s good stuff

I reported this pile of tornado debris to the CSB. The pile is seen here 3 months and 5 months after the storm. It sits in front of a city firehouse. The CSB closure directs me to a program for private property assistance. This is the level of competence from St. Louis tornado response.

Chose the right day to visit Bellefontaine Cemetery, though I do wish we’d had less wind on the walk.

O’Fallon Park nearly 6 months after the St. Louis tornado. Trees have been removed but the landscape is forever changed. You hear talk of replanting at Forest Park but this one desperately needs it. This park is loved and people see the lack of planting as just one more way they’ve been forgotten.

Compare a tree uprooted in Holly Hills (high winds during storm) versus in Fountain Park (direct hit by tornado). One gets official streets department signage and a detour. The other gets infestation and a walk into traffic. Don’t tell me this is a matter of RFPs. If they wanted to, they would.

What in the landbanking is Starwood up to. Definitely not just focused on constructing the largest parking lots by hoping to acquire Interco Plaza Park too.

I see nothing here about Metro Bus Stops or bike lanes either. And yes, I absolutely saw people cycling during last winter’s snow. But Archie doesn’t seem to be running regularly so I’m not sure he’s up for snow clearance.

The response and aftermath of a fire. This is what vacancy looks like in St. Louis.
October 23, 2025 at 2:10 PM
The difference in damage in homes that were vacant before the St. Louis tornado versus those that were occupied is stunning. There are exceptions of course with direct hits and deferred maintenance, but the story of which of this could be rebuilt is clear. Which ones will be rebuilt is another story

Today this home caught fire. It’s one of the last original homes on this block and now it’s gone. A past owner became the first female undertaker for St. Louis City, especially meaningful as she was the first Black woman to own an undertaking business in the city.

I walked Lewis Place and Fountain Park and I’ve never seen as many cats as I did in those St. Louis neighborhoods yesterday. This is a big shift from my Spring walks here. Not sure if these are displaced pets post-tornado or ferals using collapsed houses as homes but it’s troubling to see.

You have to see this Anselm Kiefer exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum. It's monumental. Its scale is so massive but you'll find yourself wanting to have access to every single detail.

What could make McKee want to demo this after over a decade?

St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Monday will break ground on a new airfield maintenance and snow removal equipment facility, an important step before the larger project begins. Also buried in the business journal story are the vendors for the larger terminal project 👀

I’d love to read this but @stltoday.com loves to have their ads crash the browser
