But it is no less demeaning & doesn't offer immigrants agency to leave on their own terms. Curious to understand how "voluntary departure" has changed under Trump.
Orlin requested voluntary departure — a request to leave within a set time frame and at his own expense — which an immigration judge granted. But he wasn’t released. Balducci explained that the grant from the judge acknowledges that he’d chosen to close his case and leave on his own. It didn’t mean he would actually be released. Instead of leaving with his family, Orlin said, he was deported in handcuffs and shackles, with chains hanging from his chest and waist, for 10 hours, including the flight from Alexandria International Airport (in Central Louisiana) to Honduras.
