Why did it have to come to exactly this? Maybe — because Congress counts on military leaders to be the ultimate defense against authoritarianism. MOCs give themselves a pass, but they know that if principled military leaders fail, we’re all going down.

Sargeant: I agree that the economy has fewer - though not no - places for founders with brio, and a lot of places to be able to work a comfortable job, just in the way that consolidation works. But I think it's a mistake also to look at work as the primary space to express the warrior spirit.

And I think a lot of conservatives listening to your narrative might say: Well, I don't think it is just SpaceX. I think there's a lot of zones in American life, from the tool factory and the car dealership all the way up to Elon Musk's landscape, where there is a certain kind of ruthless competitiveness that is important to the truth-seeking that is the work of capitalism.

Thanks to a tip on bluesky, I just read Dickens’s Barnaby Rudge. Partway through, I asked the internet whether the raven died in the book, cuz I’m a baby about such things. Here’s the answer I got — same response to several differently worded queries.

The Epstein case is ultimately not an issue about Donald Trump and the United States but rather about all the Donald Trumps of the Western world - right-wing, nationalist, illiberal, populist political leaders with ties to Russia who are threatening the security and integrity of Western democracy. It's about Russia's hybrid warfare against the West. As the rule of law capsizes in the United States and a pro-Kremlin authoritarian regime entrenches itself, Europe must heed the warning.
