I am so tired of writing profiles
If I were him and knew the bills were mostly paid I would just spend a year or so writing solely in French (where he already has a gig) and try to have something worth saying in English in spring 2027.

In hindsight I think I was so mad at you online — I really was — because you were clearly smart and curious but hemmed in by dogma and bad influences and I was maybe a year or two ahead of you in shrugging off my own ideological straitjacket by being more comfortable with uncertainty.

Like you can’t learn to play guitar because you won’t get the calluses or be able to do barre chords in time but you could learn basic knitting or sew yourself a set of linen pillowcases.

As someone who dug deep into the insult well 20+ years ago to be rude to you when you were all libertarian market supremacist and shit, I’m glad you’re here, you took roads less traveled.

Depending on what restrictions the docs put on you there are lots of skills for life you can get reasonably good at in a way that won’t fade with 6-8 weeks of reasonable focus.

This is one of the few instances in which Hollywood Journalism is mostly on the money.

The Illusionist: Al Seckel Has Left the Country
Al Seckel has left the country. But the world’s greatest collector of optical illusions left some troubles behind.

(Portishead didn’t tour that much: especially after 1998: less than 300 shows total. But the tracks from Dummy were ambiently everywhere for a long while.)

My phone has full optical character recognition of 47,000 photos. I can search individual words.

I cannot search three words in quotes.

Computers used to be powerful. That power meant something. It was power for making your life better in sovereignty to your own interests.

And now we have this.

I heard that song for the first time in the HMV in Dublin, which had a sound system fit for an arena and wasn’t afraid to crank it up. It shook up my innards.

Note though that the lead byline on the Mamdani college app story was a freelancer who specializes in “health” writing (anti-trans pieces) because he had the relationship with the race science guy who got hold of the hacked documents. The exceptions to the rules tell you more than the rules.

Precisely: it’s one of the chief tools in the conman’s box.

I don’t think we have clear evidence of that first part — his bylined pieces in 2015 were mostly on central banks / IMF / investment fund stuff. Otoh he started working for the NYT one month after his big Epstein piece for NYMag, so one can assume his bosses knew he had an in.

He literally shut down the public editor job with a memo saying “our readers can do the job better” (which was a lie) and since then whenever readers have pointed out dubious stuff (e.g. the Mamdani college app) the institutional response has been “how dare you”
