I haven't read ghost stories (and tbh I'm not a fan of short stories) but I read The Machine Gunners by Westall at school and loved every second of it. And the Watch House is pretty good too.

I don't think it's useful to worry about how to detangle difficult to follow code. This could be written much better and clearer for a reader. That's kinda the point of being pythonic.
