(Long Thread) We need to talk about measuring peaks.

Over the past year I looked at 300 players who are

1) Not in the Hall
2) Debuted after the AL was founded in 1901
3) Played the 10 years to be Hall eligible

And ranked various "prime" stretches.
Exactly 200 hitters since the AL was founded in 1901 reached 3000 TB with an .800 OPS.

18 Middle Infielders reached 3000 TB with an .800 OPS. And only 12 Middle Infielders with a positive DRS achieved this.

Doc’s career was basically 2002–2012. He accumulated the most pitcher WAR during that period, but he didn’t have the typical longevity.

During that same timeframe, 02-12, Utley had the 4th most hitter WAR. Only he didn’t make the majors until ‘03 and wasn’t full time until ‘05.

That’s HoF imo.

Since the award was first given out in 2006, 26 players have won a Fielding Bible Award at either 2B or SS.

Only five of them have reached 3000 Total Base.

And of those, only two maintained an OPS+ over 110 while doing so:

new @fangraphs.com: When he announced his retirement, I fretted that Chase Utley wouldn't get much of a sniff from BBWAA voters due to his short career and lack of awards. As he enters his 3rd year on the ballot, he's in very good shape for eventual election.

Utley ranks 36th in games played since the year 2000.

Among Middle Infielders, he ranks 6th.

Among MI with an .800 OPS, he ranks 4th. The entire top 5 is HOF/Active/PEDs except for Utley.

Chase Utley's 3189 Total Bases ranks 256th in MLB history.

Remove everyone with an OBP below .350, and he moves up to 181st.

Remove everyone with a negative dWAR, and he's 49th.

39 of the 48 players ahead of him are HOF/Active/PEDs/1800s.

Chase Utley played in the perfect era for defensive metrics to adulate him...but too early for awards voters to notice.

Today at The Lewsletter, I probed an alternate timeline where analytics had been part of Gold Glove voting during Utley's prime — and how that would change his Hall of Fame story.

Chase Utley had five seasons with at least 4 oWAR and 2 dWAR. He is one of ten players to have four or more such seasons.

The other 9 (Cal Ripken Jr., Joe Gordon, Gary Carter, Lou Bourdeau, Brooks Robinson, Honus Wagner, Willie Mays, George Davis, and Bobby Wallace) are all in the Hall of Fame.

Chase Utley is 10th in dWAR among players who spent a majority of their career at Second Base.

Of the nine players ahead of him, only Hall of Famer Joe Gordon had a higher OPS+ (120) than Utley (117).

Of the remaining eight, only HOFer Frankie Frish (110) got to even 90% Utley's OPS+.

259 players in MLB history hit 250 HR. Of them, Utley ranks 124th in career OBP.

Only 17 Middle Infielders in MLB history hit 250 HR. Of them, Utely ranks 7th in OBP.

Chase Utley ranks 9th in MLB history in Hit By Pitch.

In just seasons where they made the playoffs, Utley ranks third, behind Jeter and Rizzo.

Utley was one of the most prolific and efficient when it came to "wearing one."
November 12, 2025 at 3:25 AM
If you break rWAR down into its individual components, Utley was worth 173 runs with his bat, 69 runs with his base running and DP avoidance, and 133 runs with his glove.

Mays is the only player to beat him in all 3 areas. Lofton is the only other player to get within 80% of those numbers.
