Great passage from survivor Imre Kertesz on this. It's part of a rant against Schindler's List in which he actually sees Life is Beautiful as one of the few representations of any value.

Similar to Nicaragua, the main benefit seems to have been the morale boost of giving citizens a feeling of connection to a more raw and romantic revolutionary socialism
