A few years after George Taliaferro Indiana broke the Big Ten basketball color line by bringing in the state’s 1947 Mr. Basketball, Bill Garrett of Shelbyville. He became an educator in Indy, coaching Attucks High to the 1959 title. He died of a heart attack at 45 in 1974. bsky.app/profile/hist...

In 2018 Ora Wildermuth’s name was taken off the Intramural Center at Indiana U after rediscovery of his segregationist beliefs as a trustee. In 2020 Bill Garrett’s name went on. He broke Big Ten hoops’ color line with IU in 1948. The marker went up in 2017 www.heraldtimesonline.com/story/news/2...

It reads: INTEGRATING BASKETBALL Segregation was rampant when African American Bill Garrett led Shelbyville to 1947 state high school basketball title. At the time, an unwritten rule barred blacks from Big Ten basketball. Faburn Defrantz and Indianapolis black leaders worked with IU president Herman B Wells to give Garrett a chance at IU. Garrett's 1948 varsity debut directly challenged Big Ten ban. The back side of it (not pictured) says: Garrett’s IU years saw parts of campus desegregated, but in the Big Ten he never played with or against another black player. He graduated in 1951 as an All-American, with IU’s career scoring record. His achievements helped create opportunities for other black players in the Midwest. Named coach at Indianapolis Crispus Attucks in 1957, his team won the 1959 state title. The Bill Garrett Fieldhouse at Indiana University. When I went to school there it was named after former trustee Ora Wildermuth, but we always called it the HPER building, pronounced hyper. HPER stands for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

It includes a picture of him, and it reads: Who is Gordon Hirabayashi? In 1942, at age 24, Gordon Hirabayashi challenged the relocation and internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Convicted of violating a curfew imposed on Japanese Americans, he was sentenced to the Catalina Federal Honor Camp, the work camp that stood here between 1939 and 1973. Hirabayashi's case was reopened in 1987 and led to official apologies from the U.S. government for the mass incarceration of 117,000 Japanese American citizens and aliens alike. [Not mentioned on this sign, but some of this is mention on another: the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his conviction in 1943. Later a researcher discovered a false document was at the center of the case against him, and his conviction was reversed in 1987. Only months after his death at age 93 in 2012, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.) It reads: More than 300 Japanese Americans refused to be drafted into the military until their constitutional rights as citizens were restored. The resisters did not object to the draft, in itself, but hoped that by defying the draft they would clarify their citizenship status. If they were to share in the rights and duties of citizens, why did the government forcibly incarcerate them and their lamthes. If their loyalty was in question, why were they being crafted? Their protest had little effect: the resisters were convicted of draft evasion and served two to three years in federal prisons. Over forty of the resisters were sent to the Catalina Federal Honor Camp in leg irons and handcuffs, under armed guard. The draft resisters were pardoned by President Harry S. Truman in 1947. However, the questions of whether citizens must prove loyalty and non citizens can stand up for civil rights, have still not been resolved. Quote from Gordon Hirabayashi: "I was always able to hold my head up high, because I wasn't just objecting and saying 'no,’ but was saying ‘yes' to a prior principle, the highest of principles."
