Yes, I’m pulling the car over to look at plaques. I’ll be just a minute. Not a historian, but did minor in history at Indiana University. Formerly notgoingpro on other socials.
A few years after George Taliaferro Indiana broke the Big Ten basketball color line by bringing in the state’s 1947 Mr. Basketball, Bill Garrett of Shelbyville. He became an educator in Indy, coaching Attucks High to the 1959 title. He died of a heart attack at 45 in 1974. bsky.app/profile/hist...
In 2018 Ora Wildermuth’s name was taken off the Intramural Center at Indiana U after rediscovery of his segregationist beliefs as a trustee. In 2020 Bill Garrett’s name went on. He broke Big Ten hoops’ color line with IU in 1948. The marker went up in 2017 www.heraldtimesonline.com/story/news/2...

On the way up Mount Lemmon, you pass by a campground named for a Japanese-American who resisted internment during WWII, on the grounds of the prison where he served his time, on the road prisoners built (but is named for someone else) bsky.app/profile/hist...
This seems like a good time for everyone to do their own research on Gordon Hirabayashi. Let’s just say in another 45-80 years, if we don’t collapse, we’ll again be giving awards and naming things after people we’ve wronged. (Read the alt text.) Oh, one more skeet… www.ualberta.ca/en/folio/202...

IU’s title in ‘67 was a 3-way tie with, believe it or not, Minnesota and Purdue

Last time IU outright won a Big Ten football title was 1945. The conference had 9 teams because University of Chicago had dropped out and Michigan State hadn’t yet joined. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_Bi...
