Even though I was not able to be in Ascona in person for the Feminist Enlightenment and Politics conference, I was able to patch in via Zoom to talk about the role of women in #18thc elections, in processions and mock elections, and at election balls. #dancehistory #assemblyrooms #politicalhistory

Lots of brilliant commentary from the presenters, linking #18thc elections with the 21st century, exploring the importance of personal contact, digital and print media, the re-personalisation of politics, political theory, and democratic engagement and disengagement!

And #BSECS2025 has begun! Gutted to miss it due to my ankle injury, but tech support at Pembroke College has been brilliant, allowing me to welcome delegates from snowy Canada! We are starting with David Turner's keynote lecture on "Histories of Resistance: Disability, Agency, and Embodiment".

Bath's Guildhall was the venue for City Balls and assemblies during the #18thc. While fashionable visitors flocked to the Upper/Lower Assembly Rooms, these spaces were not always open to residents. The Mayor opened up the Guildhall for local inhabitants to use for their assemblies. #assemblyrooms

I had a fantastic time at the Bath Assembly Rooms last night - a celebration evening to thank the National Trust's collaborations with academics, local organisations, communities, and colleagues. Looking back over the last two years, we celebrated with a reception and silent disco! #assemblyrooms

Warwick's Shire Hall, where the annual summer race assemblies were held! The building is largely closed to the public, but you can just glimpse the magnificent ceiling in the 2nd photo. For a virtual tour, see: venueview.co.uk/tour/the-old...

Warwick's #assemblyrooms are located in the Court House, built by Francis Smith (1725). It was the venue for the winter assemblies in the #18thcentury, while the Shire Hall was used for the summer race balls! There is a tiny, surviving musicians' gallery, which looks like it could hold 2 musicians!

Chelsea's Old Town Hall was built in 1887 by John McKean Brydon. In 1898, the assembly room welcomed the "crowded and enthusiastic meeting" of the National Anti-Vivisection Society. The NAVS is the world’s first body to challenge the use of animals in research. #assemblyrooms
