One more day to add feedback on the Hiawatha area concepts! Think the new park should have a reserve for harvesting berries or sweetgrass? Submit a comment!

The winter recreation options for all three look pretty good. The new ski trails are longer and more interesting than the current offering. Concept C has somewhat limited winter walking options, but the other two are solid. You can see these maps in the interactive map (sorry about potato quality).

Concept B proposes to split the parkway into one-way travel lanes separated by a large median, much like the section just east of the lake. The road crossings would be at grade, but safer and with a refuge in the middle.
August 26, 2025 at 10:23 PM
Concept A proposes a grade-separated underpass along the creek. This would likely look much like the new crossing at 28th Ave on the other side of the lake.

All three concepts have small parks and other recreation integrated with the golf course, but Concept C also sets aside a large area for a community park in the southwest corner.
August 26, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Concept C spreads the golf course across more of the area, increasing the likelihood of conflict between golfers and other park users (like creek users, who sometimes experience rude behavior from golfers in the current configuration).

Lake expansion is another. Concept B proposes a return to the historical shape of Bde Psíŋ (Rice Lake), before it was dredged. Potentially exciting, but we think the impact on the current delta habitat needs more study.
August 26, 2025 at 10:07 PM
A big one is berm removal. Concept A keeps most of the berm in place, keeping the shoreline mostly as-is. Concepts B & C remove most of the berm, creating more space for natural lake edge habitat and connected wetlands. More disruptive short-term, but might create more quality habitat long-term.

MPRB has three concept plans for the Hiawatha area redesign, and you should look at them! Feedback you provide now will shape the final design.
