Whichever method, with the original traps everyone said peanut butter / nutella high fat stuff for bait. The only times we successfully caught anything, it was using bread (we definitely had carb-loving mice: one of them committed suicide by toaster and squished itself trying to get crumbs.)

Started with humane traps but the mice increased quicker than we could trap them. Hired someone and used poison. It was poisoned grain in a box, so not much interest/access for a cat & it was a small dose per grain i.e. that had to eat it over a period of time and the dosage for a cat would be huge.
