This how America has always been. Trump and social media have brought it to the surface and made people feel it is acceptable. Just ask women who got rape threats from men's rights groups, or atheists who received death threats from Christians. Not new, just louder.

On the original DVD release of the uncut version there is a good making of doco which includes interviews with Vidal. He ssemed to believe he was writing the next Ben Hur. Unfortunately this doco hadn't appeared on the latest release. Pity, because it really showed the shitshow going on BTS.

Italian softcore certainly goes further than US softcore does. Caligula also comes off the back of Brass's nazisploitation film Salon Kitty. I don't think Brass, Vidal or Guccione were on the same page about much.

Much of this new version is built from alternative takes and deleted scenes, and some order shuffling. It leaves you with a weird feeling of deja vu. Familiar yet slightly off. In some ways the hardcore scenes were the icing on a sleazy epic cake. Without them it is just a soft core sleazy epic.

The electorate has demanded. There were protests over the war in Vietnam, the wars in the Middle East, and congress didn't care. They went to war anyway, sometimes giving a token tsk tsk to the president, generally giving some form of consent. Don't blame the people for your failings.
