People treat different out-groups differently! This finding challenges the current version of the parochial altruism model. Our research opens up new avenues for understanding and potentially reducing conflict.

Our new two-dimensional measure predicts people's behavior in experimental conflict games better than traditional methods. And our results support the idea that altruism and parochialism are distinct and mostly corroborate the model. But there's a twist...

We developed a new toolkit to measure individual-level altruism and group-level parochialism separately. Across five studies, we tested these tools on people involved in real-world conflicts of varying intensity.
