It's time for Twelvelms Tuesday #10

This week's focus is an especially fun one: the Spicers. They've just come up in Episode 4, but there are no spoilers here. It's just contextual information about the Spicers' role in mage culture.
THE SPICERS Children who grew up in any magical purlieu will know stories of the Spicers. In many of them, the Spicers are cruel, Trickster-like beings who punish naughty children. Stories about Spicers often involve stealing children’s belongings; knotting their hair; or giving them nightmares. The reality of Spicers is somewhat less fantastical. Remaining records suggest the term ‘Spicer’ was a colloqual term used to refer to members of a group of mages known as Respice Finem. Unfortunately, as this group has been gone for hundreds of years, little record remains of them beyond the preservation of their core tenets of belief. Most of these are simply more extreme versions of the same scripture all mages are brought up believing, so they cast little light on the group’s actual practices. This has not stopped radical groups of mages throughout the centuries from adopting Respice Finem’s name. Since the group’s extermination at the fall of Avalon, there have been dozens of extremist mages claiming to be rekindling Respices Finem’s ways. Evidence linking these modern radicals with the original group is extremely scant.

Happy fifth birthday to Spirit Box Radio!

A lot of things have changed in the decade since I launched this show. On SBR's launch day, it had 22 downloads. I remember how exciting it was to see it showing up on Apple Podcasts. Now, it's a bad day if SBR only gets 22 downloads *an hour*.

Twelvelms Tuesday #9

This week, we're expanding a little more on last week's post which was all about Kin-Givings by taking a closer look at Coven Foundlings.

COVEN FOUNDLINGS If a mage chooses to become part of a coven besides the one they were raised in, they become a Coven Foundling. Mages can choose to change their coven the Summer Equinox, and are free to do so once they turn 13. It’s unusual for such young mages to make this decision, but if a mage under 18 decides to become a part of a coven seperate from their family, they are placed with a foster family in their chosen coven. This might be a family who have previously been unable to have a child, or a family whose own child has also become a Coven Foundling. Care is usually taken to ensure Coven Foundlings are placed in homes of equal standing to that which they came from. Most Coven Foundlings are over 18. They too are assigned a foster-family in their new coven, but this is purely cere,monial and they are not expected to live with them. In most cases, Coven Foundlings are encouraged to visit and maintain a relationship with their family despite inter-coven tensions.

Twelvelms Tuesday #8

We're getting deep in the weeds with this weeks focus, which is on Kin-Givings. This marks the first step a young mage - or mageling - will take towards adulthood. This is one of those things which will only come up tangentially in the show.

KIN-GIVINGS When mages come of age at their thirteen summer solstice, they attend a kin-giving ceremony at their coven's henge. Until this point, they are unnamed and only called by nicknames and terms of endearment, and not officially associated with any coven. At the Kin-Giving, the children are blessed at sunrise and are not allowed to speak until the sun sets. During these hours, each coven practises their own specific celebratory traditions, which may include haircutting, painting the skin, washing in local bodies of water, and eating special foods. As the sun begins to set, they return to the henge and step forward to declare their name and coven. Most children choose to stay in the coven where they are raised, but occasionally a child will claim a different coven. When their coven is claimed, they approach the altar at the centre of the henge, and pull a signet stone from the dirt benneath it, which confirms their kinning with their coven. They then reaffirm their name and coven with a smear of blood on the altar.

This time, we're taking a closer look at how mages come to study at Twelvelms University of Hermetics.

The Student Ballot Every year, each of the seven covens sends thirteen mages to Twelvelms University of Hermetics. These mages are chosen by the High Table of the Alliance from a selection of eligible mages submitted by each coven’s leader. The list of prospective scholars is called the Student Ballot. Children from powerful families are usually included by default. Others are chosen for their raw magical ability; they may have performed a great or impressive feat, saved a life, halted a storm in its tracks. The others will have scored highest in their Purlieu in the the Apitude in Magic test, or 'AIM' for short. There are ways to sway the Table's judgement in your favour. Gift baskets and offers to help with in office busy-work may stand prospective scholars in good stead. THE TWELVELMS CONSPIRACY

This month's also covers a minor alteration to the Remnants S2 schedule, extending the intermissions by one week. P1 still has five episodes to go, running weekly until 5th Dec, and after that will be a four week pause with some bonus content to tide you over for until we return for P2 in January.
