I'm put in mind of the Howl obscenity trial, wherein the judge ruled that prosecution couldn't ask whether a line or passage was "necessary" to a work of art (though he allowed "relevant"). I wonder what the real question is here, at crux.

3/ The DH rule book does a lovely job of offering succinct explanations and examples in case it's the player's first entry-point to the hobby. Hope that helps!

2/ If you're like me, you've surely explained it to family at holidays, to curious people online.

I've used Daggerheart to introduce someone to the hobby from scratch. This was during playtest times, and I went around the internet looking for simple language to explain the basics.

I don't really think other media are relevant to necessity/usefulness (and I'm assuming by necessary you mean useful, just to make the question discussable).

Surely you're aware that many people have never played a TTRPG. 1/
