We find that these resolutions significantly depressed turnout in affected municipalities, with opposition parties showing less mobilization capacity. By contrast, turnout for the incumbent Law and Justice Party increased substantially.

We use a synthetic difference-in-differences design that allows us to compare treated municipalities to re-weighted synthetic controls with similar pretreatment voting outcome trajectories, successfully aligning trends.

Illiberal actors worldwide have adopted anti-gender and -LGBTQ policies to bolster their political agendas. We use a prominent case of contemporary political homophobia to study its electoral effects: the establishment of so-called “LGBT-free zones” in hundreds of municipalities in Poland.
