The BBC's impressive Lyse Doucet, reporting yesterday after returning from Syria, said that Damascus, a city of 4 million people, is now short of water, because Israel is 'annexing' (land-grabbing) the highlands north-east of Golan, a source for the city's reticulated water supply.

The forest didn't all disappear immediately, it was more of a process, and the colonial period 1650-1750 saw most of what was left cleared.
