many people saw what was coming when the Christian right started redefining discrimination as “religious freedom” and now here it is deployed (at best) to defend a failure to do the assignment and (at worst?) as workplace discipline, for existing in a manner unacceptable to Christian nationalists

the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them

you have to be able to look bad faith in the eye and say absolutely not, even if that bad faith is coming from the highest levels of government

if you can’t, you do not - in any meaningful sense - have an institution, and all the kids who go there will learn is to weaponize bad faith themselves
this is just rank cowardice, the student very obviously disregarded the instructions and the assignment to antagonize her peers and instructors and provoke this exact reaction, society simply can’t function when the people in charge scurry like kicked dogs every time some troll bully says boo

TPUSA is an antidemocratic entity whose primary tactics are targeting and attacking educators in order to silence them while working to implement affirmative action for Christian supremacists only.

The legal, media, and academic institutions capitulating to an authoritarian ordering payments for favorable treatment are damning themselves to irrelevance. They are destroying their institutions. They will be — and should be — shunned for failing in their most basic purposes for existing.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Excellent read for the long weekend- describes exactly what we witnessed in Glendale, but could have been written about Redlands, Chino, Orange, Temecula or any of thousands districts nationwide who have been held hostage by radicalized reactionaries.

Who will carry this mantle in the 2028 Democratic primary? The opportunity is there.

Wow. Huge win for our community!
Good news! Local reactionary group GUSD Parents Voices appears to have deactivated its Instagram account, which for 4yrs has targeted + harassed local teachers, parents, LGBTQ+ people +allies— often getting national attention via the right wing media ecosystem. X acct still exists but is inactive.

It's not a sophisticated reaction, but my response to both "quiet, piggy" and the Coast Guard okaying swastikas and nooses is a deep sadness that the compassion we're working so hard to foster in our children will not just be challenged by schoolyard bullies but by the highest levels of society.

It’s good to explain that the CDC is lying and vaccines still unequivocally do not cause autism, even if it just reaches one person on here who has doubts. But the fight is out there, not in here; and the time to let go of the information deficit model of science communication was decades ago

The President of the United States is publicly calling for the political prosecution of his political opponents, urging the death penalty because they urged soldiers to uphold the rule of law.

This should be front page news everywhere. It is not, which tells much about how we got to this point.

Astonishing to stop and realize that, at any given moment, bands of masked men armed to the teeth are storming churches and daycares, terrorizing entire communities—and that most of the country's political establishment barely blinks.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

The "best" part is these books are almost all about butts and farts.
the supreme court might decide if libraries can pull books just because officials don’t like them. totally normal, right? one ruling could rewrite public libraries nationwide.

how are we still arguing about basic rights in 2025?

The people who’ve spent years vilifying and harassing public school teachers and LGBTQ+ people are working overtime to avoid talking about the overwhelming deluge of information connecting their president and many of his associates and supporters with a vast network of sex trafficking child abusers.
After 23k emails from the Epstein case reveal more details abt the sex trafficker’s relationships w/the president + a large cohort of wealthy, powerful men we keep checking to see if the “leave our kids alone” have anything to say about the kids who clearly were not left alone. Spoiler- they don’t.

I don't know if this is a libertarian issue, this is basic understanding of the purpose of education issue.

The goal of testing, and thus grading, should be determining how well a person understands the material that has been taught, not how quickly one can read, write, or think.
