Manitoba Hydro uses controlled short-circuits to heat power lines, melting ice efficiently. This process can clear 30–50 km of ice in about three hours with minimal or no customer outages. Ice removal prevents safety hazards, damage to poles, and “galloping” lines, which can cause outages or fires.
