Just a little grey duck in a big grey world. He/him. (Not to be mistaken for ho/hum.) If I have a "main topic" it's the game #Satisfactory. My main textual output is (or should be, if I'm behaving myself) over at my not-a-blog: https://greyduck.net

Not that anyone's going swimming in the Willamette in December, but don't, ok.

This is the first overflow all year, so three cheers for the Big Pipe!
The #Portland Big Pipe is at capacity which means some untreated sewage is entering the Willamette River due to heavy rainfall.

Honestly I'm looking forward to a #Satisfactory session where someone *else* mostly deals with the holiday event stuff...

What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Cueing up the upcoming public-affairs program on the reel-to-reel deck at 6am on a Sunday while running a spot break during the affiliate-network entertainment program which was playing on the turntable. (OK, later it was on CD.)
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Creating masters for both mimeograph and Ditto machines and running clean copies.
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Doing a gymnastic walkover.

I am not the originator of this insight, but: we do not actually know what is ADHD and what is post-traumatic stress, because our society does not produce untraumatized people with ADHD.

People say this a lot and it's a fundamental misunderstanding of the "GPUs" in question.

Server GPUs are not graphics cards as you know them. They won't work in your PC. They have a few other uses but their main strength is computation, number crunching.

When the bubble pops most will end up junk.
On the plus side it’ll be a lot easier to get a GPU once the bubble bursts and those things are liquidated for pennies on the dollar

Threw together a quickie #Satisfactory weekly catch-up. This week was more about the seasonal event and side-projects while waiting for the Phase 3 shipment to be ready to send up to orbit, so you mostly get screenshots this time. Enjoy!
Satisfactory: FICSMAS Redux
One of these years I'll be playing the same save over two successive winters. This... is not that year. Yes, I'm making the "heart" gesture at this gift box. It's the last one I'll see this year! I'll...

Though I really only leave the house for groceries, meds, or medical appointments, I always wear a mask. My respirator has kept me from catching Covid, flu, etc. 😷
Almost everyone I know is sick right now.

They’ve got a “bad flu” or a “nasty stomach bug”.

Almost no one will utter the word Covid.

It’s not too late to start wearing a mask.

It’s a great way to practice community care while keeping yourself healthy.

Ideally an N95 or better!

Well. Huh.

It's even a proper old-school isekai: The displaced protagonist wants to go the hell home, not be involved with whatever-the-frell is going on in this new hostile environment. It is *not* a power-fantasy dreamscape.

You win this round, K.

OK but what if we were able to filter pictures of certain people. Perhaps through alt tagging for words/names that could be added to mute lists.

Just spitballing here.

I can hardly wait for Steam to remind me that I really only played three games this year via their service. (Satisfactory and Warframe and occasionally Gems of War. Last Epoch doesn't really count.)

I know why the #Satisfactory devs set the sky-presents to cease past a certain progress threshold in FICSMAS, but I'm gonna miss them anyway. So festive and sparkly!

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI.

I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".

Guys, do not use the Discord Checkpoint thing (Discord's attempt at Spotify Wrapped).

It requires enabling them access to scrape your data, and has an alarming amount of private data being used for it.

Make sure you have these disabled.

“the USPS must turn a profit” makes me want to set things on fire

they put a clause in the fucking constitution about postal service, that’s how important it is

nothing in there about “only if you can make money on it”
🚨SCOOP: Amazon is preparing to sever ties with USPS and expand its shipping network as a true coast-to-coast rival.

It could cost USPS more than *$6 billion* a year in lost revenue, and lead Amazon to dominate yet another facet of the economy.

USPS posted a *$9 billion* loss in 2025.

... okay, my expectations were kinda low but the "Hero Without A Class" anime is managing to limbo-dance below the bar anyway. I'm three episodes in and may be done. Potato-kun has the superpower of... learning stuff really fast that should be impossible to learn, through The Power of Hard Work.
