The next few things I may try:

Trying litter attractant
Buying a plastic tub-like basin to train him to use
Setting up a tub box with another non-clay substrate to see how that changes his choice

Wish me luck.

I'm collecting data on all three theories:

1. I mostly emptied two boxes for a smooth surface, one on the floor & one in tub. He's used the tub box three times.

2. I put a camera near the boxes. Sister has hidden by a box to swat & hiss at him once so far.

3. He's not 100% averse to box pooping.

Theories:

1. He may have a strong texture preference for porcelain; he has pooped in the sink when the tub's not available.

2. His sister (littermate) is dominant & may have bullied him out of box pooping.

3. He might associate pooping in the box with pain (I got him the day after his neuter).

Before you reply, here's a list of things I have already tried/thought about:

He's healthy
He likes the boxes I have, he uses them to pee
He likes the substrate I use, he pees in it fine
4/6 boxes are unenclosed
He poops & buries in the box on rare occasions
He's done this since kittenhood

Today's doodle kept wrapping me in their leash and then taking off with zoomies. It's the worst combo imaginable. Because if they loop that damn leash behind my ankles and then pull forward 10 ft, I'm going flying.
